Two animal rights groups are demanding a local research foundation pay for mistakenly dissecting a baboon while it was still alive.
The groups, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation and Stop Animal Exploitation Now!, filed a formal complaint against the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.
The problem with this procedure is that they did not make sure the baboon was actually dead before they began the post-mortem work. So they were doing these procedures when the animal was still alive," said Michael Budkie of Stop Animal Exploitation Now!
The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research said the incident was fully investigated in 2006 by federal USDA inspectors. The foundation said the baboon was deeply drugged prior to being euthanized and experienced no pain.
