SAN ANTONIO - A group protesting Congressman Francisco “Quico” Canseco of District 23 gathered outside a luncheon where he was speaking on Wednesday. They were angry over many decisions the freshman congressman is making.
The protestors showed up by the bus load holding signs and chanting. They waited outside La Villita Assembly Hall where the 17th Annual South San Antonio Chamber State of the District Address was taking place, but they never got a chance to meet with the congressman.
One of the protestors, Nick Lee said, “We're opposing the influence of money in politics which is reflected of the support that Canseco gets from big business and billionaires”.
Demonstrators were quick to share a number of issues they think their congressman should be supporting, but is not.
Edward Mata who was amongst the protestors said, “He voted against a $100 dollar raise to our soldiers in combat”.
Military and veteran’s issues, Medicare, jobs, and the economy were all big concerns for this group.
“We need to stimulate the economy and not by cutting where jobs are located,” said Mata.
Congressman Canseco said, “Those are all my concerns too, my concerns are jobs, my concerns are preserving Medicare for future generations, our children, grandchildren because right now Medicare is in severe trouble”.
Canseco commented on when the protestors have asked to meet with him in the past.
He said, “They're insistent at a time when I'm not here or I'm not available and we've had many town hall meetings, this whole month of August”.
But, protestor Raymond Gonzalez had a different idea.
“I'm willing to put my money up front to pay for a hall, buy coffee and doughnuts and invite him to come and speak to real folks”.
Congressman Canseco advises anyone with concerns to call his office, something the group said they have already done.
