SAN ANTONIO- The youngest participants of the Rock ‘N’ Roll San Antonio Marathon kicked off the weekend festivities with their own race Saturday morning. An estimated 2000 kids took part in the ING Kids Rock San Antonio event which focused on combating childhood obesity.

There is an average of 12.5 million children and teens in the United States that are obese so the goal was to get kids moving.

Mickella Torch who participated in the run said, “It feels good to get out here and get some exercise and stuff”.

And that's what it's all about. Mickella is a step ahead when it comes to learning the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. For the past three years she has been participating in runs much like INS Kids Rock.

The one mile run attracted kids from grades kindergarten to 7th grade at Brackenridge Park. The goal was to get kids moving which is why the race was a non-timed, non-competitive event.

And the fun is just getting started. Sunday morning tens of thousands of runners, bikers, and walkers will be downtown for the Rock 'n Roll Marathon, the half-marathon, and bike tour. It’s all to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

I would like to recommend the free NAAFA Child Advocacy ToolkitSM (CATK) to assist you looking at programs. The total health of our nation's children is a serious responsibility. The NAAFA Child Advocacy Toolkit shows how Health At Every Size® takes the focus off weight and directs it to healthful eating and enjoyable movement. It addresses bullying, building positive self-image and eliminating stigmatization of large children. Additionally, the CATK lists resources available to parents and educators or caregivers for educational materials, curriculum and programming that is beneficial for all children. It can be found at: http://issuu.com/naafa/docs/naafa_childadvocacy2011combined_v04?viewMode=magazine&mode=embed It is my hope that you will take this opportunity to look at the information held in the CATK and keep what is included in mind when making decisions regarding the children in your charge.

That's great, something is better than nothing. I hope there is plenty of security measures though, with that amount of children. Look up how many Registered Sex Offenders live in the area and you'll be disturbed, there are tons including some kind of halfway house on Grayson St. a few blocks over. Don't let your guard down just because you think a big event should be safe, it is still a public park where anybody could be there too.
