SAN ANTONIO – A new movement of old-school Texas mavericks hope history can repeat itself.

They want Texas to secede from the United States and have taken their message to the White House.

An online petition on the White House website, by all accounts, was spurred by people who think President Obama’s reelection means it’s time for Texas to go its own way again.

It started with one person known only as Micah H. from Arlington.

Now, more than 70,000 people have agreed these boots are made for walkin’ away from the U.S.

"If I could vote for it, I'd vote for Texas to be its own country,” supporter Jamie Judge said. “I'd move here in a heartbeat."

So why are so many people ready to party like it’s 1845, Texas’ last year as its own country?

"People have been very concerned about the differing paths that are being taken between Texas and the rest of the country,” Daniel Miller with the Texas Nationalist Movement said.

But is secession even possible?

News 4 WOAI checked with someone whose ancestors knew a thing or two about Texas independence: Trinity University political science professor David Crockett, distant relative to Davy.

"He is a first cousin five times removed,” Prof. Crockett said.

He said neither Texas nor U.S. laws support it – the annexation agreement gave Texas the right to divide into as many as five states, but it said nothing about secession.

And then there’s the complicated task of giving back federal property.

"Military forces, tanks, jets, property on military bases – all of that would have to be disposed with somehow,” Prof. Crockett used as an example.

The Obama administration has until early December to respond to the petition but Miller says he doesn’t expect a serious response.

"Their reaction could be something as simple as ‘Guys, go get stuffed,’” Miller says.

Texas Governor Rick Perry said Tuesday he does not support efforts to break away from the union.

5pmCharlie: Thanks. I was just playing around with it. Given more time I could've come up with 5 really good states. This Texas secession thing is why a lot of people in the U.S. think Texans are a bunch of dumb a ss hicks with their heads up their a ss es. George W Bush helped to further that idea.

Unless the federal government is dissolved almost no state can escape the Union without bloodshed. Although we don't need the permission of the federal government we do need their recognition. Otherwise we'll just be seen as a defiant state and be forced, at gunpoint if necessary, to pay federal taxes, observe federal regulations, and remain cordial with neighboring states. 20 million signatures (a majority of Texans) won't make secession any easier.

Pastor Bob.. sounds to me like your not a very good pastor and could be a wolf in sheep's clothing trying to mislead the flock.. the bible warned me about people like you. The whole world is in the hands of the wicked one.. Texas included.

God has made His demand for a Christain nation on this continent quite clear. To the north, there are godless Canadians who spend their time making beer and whiskey with which to corrupt American youth. To the south, there are Mexicans in thrall to the Roman Pope who send marijuana and cocaine for the same purpose. The old US, which was His country, has fallen to Satan's people through sloth and treachery. Texas is His last bastion in this region and He is determined to have a Christian republic here. If God stands with us, who can stand against us? His will be done.

My ancester Colonel William Barret Travis, fought & died at the Alamo so that the Republic of Texas could be established. That Inevitable right will never be taken away. On February 24, 1836, my ancester William Barret Travis wrote a letter addressed: "To the People of Texas and All Americans in the World": Fellow citizens and compatriots; I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna. I have sustained a continual Bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken. I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch. The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily and will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country. Victory or Death. William Barret Travis Lt. Col. Comdt. P.S. The Lord is on our side. When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn. We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves. Travis "Remember the Alamo"
