SCHERTZ, Texas -- The identity of a woman who was found along Interstate 35 back in October remains a mystery. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office says all efforts to identify the woman, including fingerprint checks, have failed. They are now hoping a postmortem forensic artist rendering of the woman can change that.
Investigators believe the woman may have been involved in an accident in the 17,200 block of Interstate 35 South in Schertz sometime around 6:40 p.m. when a passerby spotted her in the roadway and stopped to help. The woman began talking to the passerby in Spanish, but the passerby did not speak Spanish was unable to communicate with her. The woman was taken to the San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio but died a short time later.
Several personal items, including a cell phone, were found near the woman along Interstate 35. However, no identification was found. While checking into the woman's cell phone, Schertz police were told by a contact they believe the woman was named "Maria" or "Marta". Information was also received that woman was traveling from Ecuador, possibly through Mexico. The information, however, could not be confirmed.
The woman was Hispanic, probably in her late teens or early 20's. She was approximately 4' 08" tall and weighed about 115 pounds. She had no tattoos but had some small moles or birthmarks on her face. Her hair was brown, straight, and shoulder-length. Her eyes were also brown. The woman had an upper denture plate and her lower teeth were natural. She was wearing a brown circular pendant with a "J" on it and the phrase, "Te Amo." Due to anatomic features of her uterus, she may have given birth.
