SAN ANTONIO – What was first called a heist from the Alamo – a priceless document, stolen – now has San Antonio police investigating if it’s even missing.
Chief William McManus says Alamo staff members were doing an inventory of the collection in a side office Thursday morning when they came across the document in question. The Alamo owns one of the few original copies of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Chief McManus says during the inventory, staff members couldn’t tell if the copy they had was the real thing or a fake, so they reported it stolen. Police are investigating the possibility that someone might have pulled a switcheroo by stealing the original copy and replacing it with a fake copy.
Chief McManus says experts are trying to authenticate the document, and officers are not sure anything was actually stolen.
