SAN ANTONIO -- Nationwide Mutual Insurance plans to expand its operations in San Antonio and will create hundreds of high-paying jobs as part of that expansion. Combine that with several other companies that are hiring around here and there will be 5,400 positions available.

Governor Rick Perry said Thursday the state will invest $2.5 million in Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. through the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF). The expansion is expected to generate more than $94.8 million in capital investment in Texas.

"Nationwide's expansion in San Antonio is a testament to the success of the TEF and Texas' status as the best state in the nation to invest, work and raise a family," Gov. Perry said. "Companies like Nationwide will continue to create jobs in Texas because of our state's low taxes, regulatory environment and educated and diverse workforce."

The majority of the positions will be in sales and services.

"As Nationwide grows and strives to provide superior service for our customers, the Texas Enterprise Fund, combined with the attractive workforce in San Antonio, were key factors in our decision to choose San Antonio for expansion of our operations," John Raybuck, regional vice president of Nationwide in Texas said.

There are some other big companies in the San Antonio area that are hiring. Toyota is looking for 850 workers at its assembly plant. Manufacturing Experience is not necessary. The company wants people with the right attitude and focus on teamwork.

Medtronic, a medical technology company, is hiring 1,400 workers over the next five years to work at its Diabetes Therapy and Management Center near the Rim. There are customer service jobs and other positions that require more technical expertise.

The outsourcing and information technology company ACS is looking for 300 people. AT&T is hiring 200. Four hundred workers are needed at Lackland's Cyber Command. And Caterpillar in Seguin is looking for 1,400 employees.
