SAN ANTONIO – An innocent bystander was shot in the face Monday evening while walking on the track at Sunrise Park, near Binz Engleman and Foster on the northeast side.
The shooting stemmed from an argument that started when a man and a woman drove up to the park in a car.
Officers say the man in the car got in a fight with several people playing basketball. When he got back in the car to leave, officers say he pulled out a shotgun and shot out the window.
"None of those guys were hit, but the lady that was out walking the jogging track did get hit,” Sgt. Brian Custard with SAPD says. “She was hit in the head."
Police say the victim is in her mid-forties and lives in a house just behind the park.
"She's trying to get some exercise,” Sgt. Custard says. Some other people had a dispute. The guy with a gun decides to do something stupid and shoot at some other guys and he shoots an innocent bystander."
Officers say her injuries are severe but they’re hopeful she can pull through.
"I talked to her before EMS left,” Sgt. Custard says. “She was talking, coherent. It looked like she could be okay."
Police are looking for the man and the woman who fled in the car but have very vague descriptions.
The Sunrise Park area has a lot of gang-related violence, but officers aren’t sure if that was the case in this shooting.
