Illegal dumping: Not along my road!

SAN ANTONIO - Old tires, mattresses, and even discarded furniture are some of the items you are likely to see at a dump. But some of you told us those kinds of items are also showing up along Gibbs-Sprawl Road on the East Side.

People who live along Gibbs-Sprawl Road are talking about mounds of trash, mattresses, sometimes furniture that just keep popping up alongside the road. Plus, they say the problem is getting worse. News 4 WOAI cameras also captured images of a collection of old tubs, windows, tires, and discarded wood.

"It's disgusting," said Michael Peterson, who has lived in the area for two years. "Who would do this? Why? They don't have the decency to take it to the dump."

Other neighbors said there are weeks that are worse than others.

"I don't know if we need some lights or something, because all this street has no light," explained neighbor Olga Zamora. "It's just dark, completely."

We contacted City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor. She told us the city has cleaned up the area many times, but that more is coming.

"We may also look at getting some additional lighting in the area," said Councilwoman Taylor. "And there's a possibility of getting some cameras out there or get staff out there."

Councilwoman Taylor told News 4 WOAI she expects to see one or a combination of those changes within six months.

City officials say the fine for illegal dumping is $100 to $2,000. But if the case involves a lot of dumping, state law comes into play. That means fines get a bit higher, and violators could serve some jail time.

Sorry you feel that way stunned but if they would do it then maybe people would get the message to not do the crime and the law enforcement people would be better able to concentrate on the crimes that do matter.

Don't be fooled to think it's not the neighbors who live around there. Doubt someone would drive all the way out there on a dark road to dump their crap ! It's one of their own !

Just found the info: District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos, the program will use cameras to catch violators' license plate numbers. Those drivers will then get a citation, that will reimburse the program. The project will cost between $12,000 and $15,000, but is expected to save thousands more since the city will not have to clean up the dumping sites. If the program is successful in District 3, it may be implemented all across the city.

Stunned, it's not slavery, it's community service. Why not get those individuals (who have nothing positive to offer the community even if they weren't sitting in jail anyway)to do something positive?

Digging through the trash looking for names and addresses is the only way you're gonna find some of the perps. I had the same problem on a couple of my vacant lots in Comal Co. While the cops couldn't really do anything without being able to prove that the person whose name is in the trash is the same person who illegally dumped it (could have been a family member or neighbor), just having the cops show up at their door is enough to scare them away from doing it again. Of course, one of the idiots who dumped on my lot was stupid enough to admit to the cops she had done it - so she got a ticket and was ordered by the judge to go clean up ALL the trash on my lot. It was a simple, yet satisfying solution.

Ok Sheriff, take a page out of your brother Joe's book and make a chain gang for cleaning this and other public "dumps." In addition let some of the "residents" of your grilled hotel sort thru the trash for names and addresses of offenders. Make sure the "residents" are Bandidos and or "Emes." Be prepared for a sudden spike in "beatings by unknown persons" and a quick decrease in dumpings. Problem solved.
