SAN ANTONIO - Old tires, mattresses, and even discarded furniture are some of the items you are likely to see at a dump. But some of you told us those kinds of items are also showing up along Gibbs-Sprawl Road on the East Side.
People who live along Gibbs-Sprawl Road are talking about mounds of trash, mattresses, sometimes furniture that just keep popping up alongside the road. Plus, they say the problem is getting worse. News 4 WOAI cameras also captured images of a collection of old tubs, windows, tires, and discarded wood.
"It's disgusting," said Michael Peterson, who has lived in the area for two years. "Who would do this? Why? They don't have the decency to take it to the dump."
Other neighbors said there are weeks that are worse than others.
"I don't know if we need some lights or something, because all this street has no light," explained neighbor Olga Zamora. "It's just dark, completely."
We contacted City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor. She told us the city has cleaned up the area many times, but that more is coming.
"We may also look at getting some additional lighting in the area," said Councilwoman Taylor. "And there's a possibility of getting some cameras out there or get staff out there."
Councilwoman Taylor told News 4 WOAI she expects to see one or a combination of those changes within six months.
City officials say the fine for illegal dumping is $100 to $2,000. But if the case involves a lot of dumping, state law comes into play. That means fines get a bit higher, and violators could serve some jail time.
