From NBC News:

The FDA and the makers of Icy Hot voluntarily recall two products after reports of serious burns following usage.

Chattem Inc. is recalling all sizes and lots of the following Icy Hot Heat Therapy products: Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat - Back; Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat - Arm, Neck and Leg; and samples of Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat - Arm, Neck and Leg, which were included as promotions in 3-ounce cartons of Aspercreme Pain Relieving Creme.

They are recalled because the company has received reports of first-degree, second-degree and third-degree burns, as well as skin irritation associated with using these products.

"It's like a sunburn, then becomes a partial thickness injury when it raises up in a blister or raises the top of the skin," said Leann Cortmiglia, registered nurse at UCSD Burn Clinic.

There's no word on how many people were burned or if they followed package directions, but the two types of air-activated patches work by chemical reaction.

Warnings on the box and product say not to heat or microwave them.

They also say people older than 55 and people with diabetes should not use these products.

"People or diabetics with delayed sensations -- people who have neuropathy in their hands or feet should never use these things --where they don't have normal sensations," said Cortmiglia.

The makers of Icy Hot are asking consumers to immediately stop using the products and discard
or return them for a refund.

But if you do suffer a burn, Cortmiglia said to keep the burn cool and wet by using a cool, wet washcloth.

All other Icy Hot products are still on the market and considered safe.

To get a refund visit Chattem Inc's Web Site or call 888-442-4464.

If you suffer a burn, you're asked to file a report on the FDA's Web site.
