SAN ANTONIO - Imagine having to get police to believe that you accidentally shot your wife while you were both sleeping.

That's what Gilbert Covarrubias, 46, says happened to him early Monday morning at his West Side home in the 7400 block of Pipers Bluff. Covarrubias says when he turned in his bed the covers knocked his 40 caliber gun off the night stand. He says when he grabbed it to put it back the gun went off and accidentally shot his wife in the breast.

“As I went to grab it, I didn't realize it was loaded," explained Covarrubias.

He says he was in shock and his 35 year old wife was in a panic.

“Yeah, she was wounded. I told her, 'Hold on and just stop and let me put pressure on it.  Let me see where you've been hit,'” Covarrubias told News 4 WOAI.

Police handcuffed Covarrubias and he said it was tough getting them to believe his story. They finally talked to his wife and learned it was an accident.

Covarrubias says he had just bought the gun a month ago for security and didn't even realize it was loaded. He doesn't plan on ever having another weapon around the house.

Police say Covarrubias' wife was conscious and alert as she was taken to the hospital. He's now counting his blessings that his wife is okay. She is out of the hospital and resting at home.

Rule #1 - Treat ANY gun as if it were loaded

Gun owners should learn about them and how to handle them safely... pretty obvious this guy was oblivious. A .40 caliber semi-auto pistol, sitting with a round in the chamber, in an area where it could be easily knocked off, and pointed at somebody when it was picked up? Strikes one, two and three... The wife is lucky to be alive.

I've re-read this story a few times and I still don't fully understand how he can accidently shoot her. Wouldn't his body be in the way between the nightstand and his wife? So gun falls to the floor, he hears it and leans over to pick it up, places it back on the nightstand where it accidently goes off...the bullet somehow manages to miss him completely who is likely sitting up or leaning over still and then hits his wife who is laying down sleeping. Wow that's some bad luck! Either way he should never own a gun!Plus he says that he didn't know it was loaded although he bought it for protection. Alot of good an unloaded gun is going to do for protecting you! He knew.

before you get a gun, please get educated on it and how to use it enough to REMEMBER that it's loaded!!

Carmen do you read your Bible? You should be spreading the Word not slandering people who need Jesus! Just saying. They talk about people like you in the Bible. Open your eyes.

After listening to this guy on tv last night, telling his story, I am of the belief that he does not need to own a firearm. No common sense and definitely not the sharpest tack in the box.
