SAN ANTONIO - Imagine having to get police to believe that you accidentally shot your wife while you were both sleeping.
That's what Gilbert Covarrubias, 46, says happened to him early Monday morning at his West Side home in the 7400 block of Pipers Bluff. Covarrubias says when he turned in his bed the covers knocked his 40 caliber gun off the night stand. He says when he grabbed it to put it back the gun went off and accidentally shot his wife in the breast.
“As I went to grab it, I didn't realize it was loaded," explained Covarrubias.
He says he was in shock and his 35 year old wife was in a panic.
“Yeah, she was wounded. I told her, 'Hold on and just stop and let me put pressure on it. Let me see where you've been hit,'” Covarrubias told News 4 WOAI.
Police handcuffed Covarrubias and he said it was tough getting them to believe his story. They finally talked to his wife and learned it was an accident.
Covarrubias says he had just bought the gun a month ago for security and didn't even realize it was loaded. He doesn't plan on ever having another weapon around the house.
Police say Covarrubias' wife was conscious and alert as she was taken to the hospital. He's now counting his blessings that his wife is okay. She is out of the hospital and resting at home.
