BOERNE, Texas - Rumors are swirling with homeowners concerned about the city annexing property with a portion of it possibly being used to build a truck stop. It's something citizens fear will attract crime.
Many have sent emails to city leaders and several folks are attended a pubic hearing Tuesday night. It’s the second hearing about the city’s plans to annex 28 acres of land off 34 Shooting Club Road at the request of the property owner M&K Investments JV.
According to the assistant city manager Jeff Thompson, the annexation would allow the city to set up utilities and collect fees and tax revenue from any business development in the industrial area. Thompson says he has received emails from people worried about increased violent crime if a truck stop and travel center opened in the area.
In a previous job, Thompson said he worked near a truck stop owned by Pilot/Flying J.
“I drove past one everyday, on my way to work, for five years and never saw any of the problems I heard about in these emails,” Thompson replied.
We reached out to the company, but have not heard back yet.
"I did some investigation on the FBI website and there are some pretty disturbing things that happen at truck stops," insisted Toni Lott.
The homeowner moved to Boerne about a year ago wanting a quiet community to raise her daughter. She said if a truck stop is built in the industrial area, it would be too close to her house, raising concern about violent crime.
She sent emails to city leaders and plans to speak at the public hearing.
Nina Woolard, Mayor Pro Tem, says she's surprised by the negative comments regarding the annexation of the property.
Council members expect to make a final decision on annexation in February.
