SAN ANTONIO--Women are defying the Vatican and being ordained as Catholic priests.
85-year-old Adele Jones who lives in San Antonio belongs to the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests. "I'm the first woman in Texas to be ordained a Roman Catholic Women priest, and the oldest in the world, " said Jones.
Jones said her official title is Reverend Dr., but she'd rather keep it casual. "Del Jones, that's what everyone calls me, it's my nickname, " replied Jones.
Her first calling was to become a wife and mother. "I was a wife for 30 years and then I was divorced, and my children went on their way, " added Jones. Jones has two adult sons.
"When I moved to San Antonio that's when I got into the church deeper and deeper.
Jones said she went on the receive a Master's degree in Theology and then a Doctorate in Ministry and Pastoral Counseling.
"I got my Doctorate when I was 70 years old so I guess I'm a late bloomer, " added Jones.
Jones was recently ordained a Priest at a ceremony in Virginia, but not inside a Catholic church. Jones realizes she's not accepted by her own religion.
"We're breaking the Canon law, but it's an unjust Canon law and needs to be changed, " added Jones.
Deacon Pat Rodgers with the Archdiocese of San Antonio said according to Catholic teaching women are not called to the priesthood. "Therefore there are no women priests in the Catholic Church, " added Rodgers.
Jones remains hopeful that view will change. "I'm in the sunset years of my life, and I'm going to give it all I have for as long as I go, " replied Jones.
Jones said currently there are 124 women Priests who belong to the Association of Catholic Women Priests. "We are growing, " added Jones.
Jones went on to say she will focus her ministry toward the Gay and Lesbian community.
