McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A South Texas prosecutor wants the Texas Department of Public Safety to review their policy allowing airborne troopers to use lethal force.
Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra says he's told Texas Rangers to tell their DPS superiors to perform such a review. He says the high risk to the public of shooting from a helicopter demands review of the policy.
Guerra met Wednesday with Rangers investigating an airborne trooper's fatal shooting of two immigrants.
A DPS trooper aboard a helicopter fired at a fleeing pickup truck he believed was carrying a covered drug load Oct. 25. Two Guatemalan immigrants in the truck bed under a tarp were killed; another was wounded.
Guerra says no charges against the trooper have been considered but a grand jury will review the matter.
