SAN ANTONIO -- A 10-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after she was bitten on her face by her family’s new dog.

The injured girl’s family tells News 4 WOAI she is out of surgery now and doing better, however more surgery will be needed.

Neighbor Walter Gomez says, “Kids are innocent. To grow up and have scars on face, my God, that's terrible."

The little girl's grandmother says the entire family has been shaken up by this. We're told the dog that attacked was a stray, picked up by the little girl's mother just two days ago. The grandmother says there were no signs the dog was aggressive, he was getting along with the kids; that is until he snapped.

Lisa Norwood with Animal Care Services notes "absolutely any animal can bite. Doesn't matter whether it’s stray or owned animal, so it pays to be cautious."

The dog is now in quarantine at Animal Care Services. We're told it is micro-chipped and officials are now searching for the owner. If you see a stray and want to help, officials say do so very carefully.

Norwood says if "the animal has been neglected or simply sick or injured, call 311. Give us as much information as possible so we can go pick up that animal."

As for this family, they say the attack has changed their minds about owning a dog and it will certainly be a long time before they pick up another stray.
