SAN ANTONIO - Patients who undergo gastric bypass not only lose weight -- they may also get rid of their diabetes.
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic followed 60 diabetics who underwent gastric bypass, a different version of bypass surgery called gastric sleeve, or were treated with medicine only.
They found patients who had gastric bypass were significantly more likely to have their pancreas restored to an almost normal state -- meaning it could make insulin again.
Many patients no longer had diabetes months after the procedure.
Experts suspect the significant drop in belly fat after surgery helps the pancreas restore function.
