SAN ANTONIO- Funeral services have been set for a Texas Department of Public Safety officer who died in the line of duty in San Antonio. Sixty-seven year old Sergeant Paul Hernandez died Thursday after he collapsed during a physical readiness test.

Hernandez was stationed in Universal City and most recently worked for the highway patrol division. During his nearly 36 years as a DPS officer, he also served in the driver's license division, and criminal investigations division.

Funeral services will be held in the Dallas area. A visitation for the general public will take place Monday morning starting at 11a.m. at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Sachse, Texas. Funeral services will then take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Rowlett United Methodist Church in Rowlett. A burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Lavon.

Sergeant Hernandez is the 88th DPS officer to die in the line of duty. He leaves behind his wife Vera and a son.

Check it out Bigs. About to make you feel very small. I knew Sgt Hernandez very very well. He was not content with sitting at home on retirement. He always said he would be part of the DPS org until someone took him away kicking and screaming. This isn't a security guard at a bank or a greeter at Wal-Mart type of surroundings. He had passed fitness with flying colors (better than some young'uns sometimes) and he was in the process of doing it all over again. There's no shame in keeping busy and not depending on the system to take care of you. I say way to go DPS by keeping him on because they knew if someone got rowdy at the DL as they can do sometimes, Paul would have no hesitation in quelling the situation. He was still foremost a Texas State Trooper and former CID Agent. And there's a reason guys like that stay on until their last day I promise you.
