SAN ANTONIO -- A special barbecue fundraiser was held Saturday for a San Antonio police officer injured while on duty.

Dozens liked up at the VFW Post 76 in downtown San Antonio, all of them ready to open their wallets to help pay for Jonathan Esquivel's medical expenses.

Esquivel had stopped to help clear an accident on Loop 410 in February when he was hit by a driver who allegedly was texting while driving.

Esquivel is still unable to walk.  The officer lives at a rehabilitation facility, but Esquivel's father says his son is a fighter.

"He's young, he's strong, he's 28 years old," Robert Esquivel said.  "Through God's will and the power of prayer he's pulled through.  He went through 10 surgeries and he's survived all of them."

Esquivel's father says the investigation is still pending against the driver who reportedly hit his son.

Sheryl Scully has been hacking away at medical plans for years, and is the reason there has a been a mass exit at police fire and city employees in general...its also the reason she hasn't hired because even though the money had been allocated through bonds, grants and the general fund if she doesn't hire the city doesn't have to "pay" or contribute to the medical plan.

Aren't all of an injured police officer's medical expenses already paid by the city's insurance? I don't mean this to be taken as a negative comment, I was just surprised that they had to have a private fundraiser to take care of him.
