SAN ANTONIO- It's been nearly a week since a single mother of five died after she lost control of her SUV and crashed. The accident happened last Sunday morning just shortly after midnight along Loop 410 near Marbach on the West Side.

Thirty-one year old Monica Alvarez- Garay and her family were arguing when police say she tried to reach back. According to officers this caused her to jerk the steering wheel and hit a concrete barrier partially ejecting her from the vehicle. She later died at the hospital. Her three passengers were OK.

Monica left behind five kids all under the age of 16. On Saturday, her children helped organize a fundraiser at the family home in hopes of raising enough money to pay for funeral expenses.

“If she was here and it was them, my mom would probably do the same for everyone else,” explained Alicia Garay, the victim’s daughter:

It’s hard to imagine that 15- year old Alicia just lost her mom nearly a week ago. The young teen was so composed and filled with pride as she talked about the type of giving and loving person that her mom was. Alicia said her grief was made easier as she was surrounded by family and friends who helped organize a barbeque plate sale at their home located along the 3200 block of McArthur Avenue.

“I'm just glad that everybody came out to help support and donate food,” explained Alicia, “And make this happen for my mother so that way we can help pay for funeral expenses”.

Funeral services are scheduled for next Tuesday and Wednesday, but Monica’s family is still scrambling to pay for it all. Alicia said she feels very blessed to have such an outpour of support to get her family closer to putting her mother to rest.

“I didn't expect all of this. I honestly didn't think like everybody would come out, but I’m glad that they did”.

An account has been set up in Monica Alvarez’s name at Texas Community Bank located at Loop 1604 at Somerset Road.

A prayer Service is scheduled Tuesday at 7 PM at Trevino Funeral Home at 2525 Palo Alto Road in San Antonio. Funeral services are set for Wednesday moring at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church at 10 AM, located at 13466 IH 35 South in Von Ormy. That’s followed by the burial at First Memorial Park at 20567 State Highway 16 South in Von Ormy.
