GALVESTON, Texas (AP) -- The Coast Guard says a freighter is stranded about 90 miles southeast of Galveston -- in the path of Hurricane Ike.
The Coast Guard early Friday received a radio call for help about a 584-foot bulk freighter, which is carrying 22 people.
Petty Officer Patrick Kelley told The Associated Press that the ship, hauling petroleum coke, broke down in the path of the hurricane "in a potentially dangerous situation."
Kelley says they're so far offshore, you're looking at only helicopter responses -- then you're dealing with winds.
Kelley says the Coast Guard is weighing its response options.
No details were immediately provided by the Coast Guard on the name of the ship or where it was headed.
Ike is expected to blast onto land early tomorrow -- in the Galveston area.
