SAN ANTONIO -- Hundreds of people gathered at the Wheatley Heights Sports Center Sunday morning to run and walk for a cure for aplastic anemia, a rare bone marrow failure disease.

The Hope, Steps & A Cure 5K Run & Walk event included inspiring stories from patients, families and doctors.

Bill Hamm, an organizer for the event, said he hopes the event could help spread the word about the disease.

“The idea is to get as many people as possible registered so that when somebody needs a transfusion or bone marrow transplant there is somebody that they can pick from especially those who aren't related and don't have donors," he said.
