AUSTIN, Texas -- One person was killed when an 18-wheeler crashed and burst into flames on Interstate 35 Tuesday.

The happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 9000 block of Interstate 35 at the Slaughter Creek overpass. Police said the big rig was traveling in the northbound lanes when it hit an embankment and then crashed into a bridge. Flames and smoke could be seen from about a mile away from the accident site.

The Texas Department of Transportation website states the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 at MM 225 are closed and will remain closed to allow for clean up.

KXAN reports that TxDOT has temporarily lifted tolls on SH 45 SE between Interstate 35 and US 183. Drivers trying to bypass the closure can use the toll road to reach US 183 and head north into Austin. Tolls remain in effect on SH 130.

Information for this story was obtained from KXAN in Austin.
