BOERNE -- A non-profit has some nasty new neighbors that are causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. For the past several weeks, feral hogs have been tearing up the grounds of the Rainbow Senior Center at Kronkosky Place. The center is known for its beautiful landscaping, which now looks like someone took a tiller to about one-third of the grounds.
The senior center is in the Boerne city limits, so hunting is not allowed. A trap has been set and a surveillance camera caught 15 hogs on the grounds one evening, but staff members said the trapper informed them that there could be twice as many hogs wreaking havoc on the grounds.
The center has been located on Old San Antonio Road for about two-and-a-half years and has never had a problem with hogs before. Staff members said the trapper informed them the hogs could be on the move because of the drought.
Re-doing the damaged lawn will cost thousands and staff members worry that the hogs may have also damaged the sprinkler system.
"We do not have a feral hog line item in our budget for the 2012 year, so $3,500 is a lot to our expenses, but it will also hinder our income from lack of facility rentals," Julie English explained.
The damage won't be repaired until the hogs are captured and removed. The center is a non-profit organization, so if you'd like to find out more information or make a donation,
