SAN ANTONIO - As the country moves toward the fiscal cliff Monday, would it surprise you to know there are potentially hundreds of billions of dollars of government waste just waiting for clean-up?
Our investigative news partners at the Washington Guardian report that inspectors general recommendations to curb waste and overspending at many government agencies have gone unaddressed - some for almost a decade.
For example, the inspector general at the Department of Transportation says his agency has more than 630 open recommendations to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The oldest are from 2004. One recommendation is to actually use two-billion dollars in grant money that remains untouched by anyone at the agency.
In total, the recommendations could save tax payers tens of billions of dollars in this one department.
A Transportation Department spokesperson declined to comment.
