SAN ANTONIO -- A father and his 3-year-old son died after they and two other family members were hit by a car on the Northeast Side Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened just after 4:00 p.m. near Interstate 10 East and North Foster Road. Police say 30-year-old Jose Beltran, his wife Kristy Vergara, and their two children, 4-year-old Adrian Beltran and 3-year-old Eli Beltran, were walking on the sidewalk when they were struck by a Cadillac. Investigators say the car hit a pole before crashing into the family. Deputies believe the woman driving may have been on her cell phone.

Jose Beltan was hit from behind and killed on impact. Both boys were taken to University Hospital. Eli died of his injuries a short time later. Adrian, who suffered several broken bones, remains in critical condition.

Vergara, who is 8 months pregnant, was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). News 4 WOAI was told her water broke at the accident scene, and she is expected to give birth early within the next few days.

The woman who was driving the car was taken to Northeast Baptist Hospital, and her condition is also unknown.

Just the other day at an intersection, the light turns green and the guy in front of me doesn't move, because he's texting. I give him a gentle sound of the horn as a gentle wake up call to let him know the light is green. What does he do? He flips me the finger. I pulled up along side of the driver at the next red light and I asked him if I hurt his feelings by sounding my horn at him. And he asked me in Spanish cause he couldn't speak English: "can't you wait?" I simply told him that you are supposed to go when the light is green. Sad that many people on the road are plain idiots. People text all the time while driving and I will continue to use my horn whether I hurt their feelings are not. If I do hurt their feelings, I am willing to buy them an ice cream.

cell phones have become such a huge problem that i believe te time has come to ban them in motor vehicles, period. as a truck driver sitting ten feet in the air while driving most of you would be amazed at the number of people doing something with their cell phone while passing me. an easy 2 out of 5 vehicles messing with the cell phone. and i drive the speed limit; so if their passing me their exceeding it. how can one pay attention to driving 80 miles an hour and do anything on the cell phone. its time for a complete ban. in fact maybe even install some kind of device on all vehicles to disable cell phone use while a car is moving. as i see it thats the only way to change this behavior. most will not give it up willingly.

Ugh! Distracted driving is like drunk driving, in many ways. So sad. I hope this woman pays dearly for her selfishness! Sorry to say, Gnaeus, legislation won't help... take for instance, it's 'legislatively' illegal to drive under the influence, but it happens every day, like it’s the city's official sport. (Sighs loudly)

Completely avoidable tragedy caused by a self absorbed mindless idiot. Hope that phone call was worth two lives and the entire family you destroyed. I hope part of the court restitution is that you may NEVER own or use a cell phone again.

DA please charge this woman with 2 counts of vehicular negligent homicide, something to take her off the streets.

Hi Lervia. Just to say thanks for adding to my comments yesterday about the grease monster. As always, you are right. I sorta left the comment incomplete, because I didn't elaborate on the fact they are using the grease monster to scare us like little kids. They should have money encumbered for that problem since eons ago. Please don't mind my lack of concentration. Greetings!

I normally wouldn't wish ill will on other people, but I hope the driver spends the rest of her life paying for this. Because of her stupidity, two people are dead. I work downtown and take 281 south to get to work, and about twice a week I'll see someone flying down the freeway while yapping on their cell phones, or driving with their knees (yes, their knees!) while texting. When will people learn? It's amazing how stupid people have become today.
