SAN ANTONIO -- The family of a man murdered outside a North Side gym is calling his death a senseless crime.
Juan Escamilla, 31, was shot and killed Sunday night outside the Planet Fitness fitness center at Loop 410 and McCullough. A member at the club, 21-year-old Margaret McCombs was also critically injured. Police say 27-year-old Yu Masaki had became infatuated with McCombs at the gym and shot her and Escamilla as Escamilla was walking her to her car. Masaki was arrested Monday morning at his apartment on Sahara and charged with murder.
Escamilla's family says they and the community have suffered a tremendous loss. His father and brother described him as a great man who was active at work and in the community. He had just started working as a coach with the Catholic Youth Organization and was a loving father.
"We are all leaning on our faith and trying to be strong for his 9-year-old son,” explained Juan's brother Julio Escamilla.
Juan worked as a teller supervisor at Frost Bank. He started working part-time at the front desk for Planet Fitness just two weeks ago.
