SAN ANTONIO -- A tragedy blocks from a north side home has left a grieving family with nothing but questions.

Family members say 49-year-old Guillermo "Willie" Benavides was hit from behind and run over while he was on his motorcycle on West Ave. Dec. 19.  The driver took off.

Benavides never was able to speak to his family again and he died from his injuries Jan. 6. No one has been arrested in connection with the accident.

Benavides' son, Will Benavides, says his father was on his way home from work as a shuttle driver at San Antonio Military Medical Center.  He spoke to emergency crews and was conscious on the way to University Hospital but lapsed into a coma and didn't wake up. Willie suffered numerous broken bones and kidney and renal failure, but was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Will says his father was a "great father, a great grandfather" and was always cheerful with his passengers at work.

"It hurts to know that someone is not accountable for their actions. I'm just hoping someone might know the key info or know something else," Will said.

The accident happened on West Ave. near Nassau, just blocks from home.  It's a busy intersection and the family believes someone witnessed the accident and could help police in the investigation.

"From what we know, half a bumper was there at the scene and a couple streets down, people actually saw someone get out and tear the other half of the bumper off and keep going," Will said.

Police are looking for a silver Chrysler 300 with extensive front end damage.  If you have any information about the accident, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers. You can remain anonymous.  Just call 224-STOP (7867).
