SAN ANTONIO -- It's been a year and a half since 18-month-old Ava Lopez was hit and nearly killed by an alleged drunk driver on the North Side. But the driver who hit her is still free.

"I don't understand it at all," Ava's mom Traci Lopez told News 4 WOAI. "As far as I've seen and heard, she continues to to live as she lived life before."

Julie Bronson, 42, is accused of driving drunk, hitting Traci and her two daughters in their yard in April of last year, and taking off after the accident. Bronson lives just down the street from the Lopez family.

Traci's daughter, Ava, almost died that day.

"She was hit head on, basically, flipped in the air and came back on this woman's windshield, and flipped over the back of the car," explained Traci.

Ava's brain was swollen, and doctors held little hope.

"Doctors basically told my husband and I the chances of her surviving are very small," Traci recalled.

Ava survived, but she's now legally blind and in therapy five days a week. Her mom is reminded on a daily basis that Ava will never be the healthy little girl she was before that tragic day.

Bronson bonded out of jail the same week of the accident. Traci told us Bronson never apologized.

When Traci recently saw Bronson out shopping, she said nothing to her. She said her focus is on her daughter Ava. Traci also told us she believes she'll receive some peace when justice is finally served.

I checked with the district attorney's office and was told a hearing on the case is set for December 8th. We'll continue to follow this story and let you know what happens.

This does not surprise me at all. My daughter was hit head on by a drunk driver on 1604 (back in '02)..nothing was done to the drunk driver. MADD won't even help..now if someone DIES..oh MADD is all over that like a chicken on a june bug !! I agree with lilstar and johnsonscott, by now I would have taken care of the drunk myself..AND I would probably be in jail

Our DA had a run for her money and that should be a wake up call and I hope it is. Now to the matters at hand. There were alot of judges in this past election and they wanted our vote and we want justice. While these people go about their lives, life will never be the same for the Lopez family and others impacted by drunks. Susan Reed the ball is in your court what are you going to do?

Susan Reed had far more important things on her agenda, like getting re-elected. Just my 2 cents worth...

I also live in the Lopez family's neighborhood and I do not suffer any theories about forgiving people who do things like this. There is no forgiveness for a crime like this. Sooner or later, I will see this woman in the HEB on Blanco, or maybe the Walmart on 281 at 1604, or somehwere around here. On that day, she will be treated in a fashion I doubt she is used to. If there is a Hell, it exists for people like this.

I'm still waiting for Justice in the drunk that distroyed my 2004 Jeep wrangler in front of my house almost 3 yrs ago. No licience, no insurance and he left the seen of the accident. Justice delayed is justice denied.

The current DA makes the decisions about which types of cases they will focus on - and she has chosen white collar crime - not sex offenses or drunk driving offenses. I know one person who has had the breathalyzer in his car for 3 years and still hasn't been to court to have his case resolved. The voters had a choice on Tuesday and this is the system and the District Attorney they wanted.

I agree with lilstar! If she just lived down the street from me, I would have taken justice in my own hands. Can you imagine seeing this person living like nothing happened? I would deal with it myself!

Since her trial dates keep getting postponed, I will believe it when I see her at trial in December. I should not have taken 18 months to take care of this.

I also hope they're filing a personal lawsuit against the woman! Seriously, how can you be so drunk that you hit them in their YARD???
