SAN ANTONIO – A woman and her son were startled by the banging on their home’s door early Friday morning. It was a neighbor alerting them to a fire that was burning at the back of the house.

Around 5:30 a.m., the house in the 8500 block of Standing Rock on the city’s Southwest Side caught fire. Investigators say it appears to have started near the water heater when some material by it caught fire, then spread to the building.

The woman, her son, and the family dog were the only ones at home when the fire broke out. Her husband was already at work at Lackland.

Everyone got out of the house without injury, but there were some tense moments because of the concern that some ammunition in the home could be set off by the flames.

Fire officials estimate the damage at $10,000 to the family’s belongings and rented home.
