SAN ANTONIO -- News 4 WOAI has received more complaints against a North Side nursing home that is under investigation for abuse.

Viewers contacted us saying San Pedro Manor has been without air conditioning for weeks. Family members said their loved ones are being asked to eat in their rooms because it's just too hot in the dining area.

We contacted The Department of Aging and Disabilities concerning the complaints. Investigators with agency went to the facility Monday to look into the problem.

Well on 06/21/10 my dad was realased from Baptist Hospital and sent to San Pedro Manor. He had just rec'd a quad bypass. We were told the nursing home would expect us abt 2:00 pm, well by the time we were released it was 7:30pm. Whn we arrived by Ambulance and entered the facility, I noticed it was HOT after getting to the 3rd floor it was even hotter. we walked to the nurses station to see a patient in a wheelchair playing fetch/catch (papers in hand)with one of the nurses, we later found out that the papers were my fathers papers that were sent by fax to the nursing home. How the patient got a hold of them we will never know. They showed us to his room, upon arrival to the room we noticed that the bed had a soiled pad on it. HELLO! and you've been expecting us since 2:00 pm. At this point my dad says he's not staying ! So I run downstairs to catch the Ambulance drivers to hire them to take my father to our house. THEY WERE GONE! no choice lets take him in the car, pls keep in mind he just had a quad on the 17th June. so off to our house. We get home I realized that I had left the prescriptions for his meds with the nurse, so I drove back to the nursing home to get them. Upon arrival, the clerk tells me that I can not have them..Um yes your going to give them to me because he is not a patient of this facility! She makes a couple of calls and I turn to look at their bulletin board, only to see Food License from City of SA to be expired as of 05/31/2010. Hmmmm she returns to tell me I need to come back tomorrow morning to get them from Administration. Um NO ! your going to give them to me now, or I'm going to call the news crews now and show them your expired documents you have posted. In less than 5 min I had my dad's scripts. 1st thing Tues morning I call the Director of Nursing to file the complaint, then place a call to the Tx Dept of Elderly services and officially file my complaint with them. Medicare/Medicaid pay good money for poor treatment.

donoho: I understand it may have been a while back for your loss but I feel for you all the same. My mother was in a home and I can understand your frustration. You get the feeling that when you turn your back, or leave your loved one behind, the people running these places either a. don't give a crap or b. (which is worse) turn into evil demented people.

Maintenance at this facility was deplorable when my dad was there in 2001. He was in a room that had a water leak in the ceiling, and their "answer" to the problem was to put a trash can in the bathroom doorway to catch the water. It was also seeping down the inside of the wall by the light switch. I asked them what they planned to do about the situation and got a shrug. My dad was recovering from having cardiac stents put in, and I worried about him slipping in the water (they didn't empty the trash can when it overflowed) or being electrocuted when he turned on the light for the bathroom. They finally agreed to move him, but sadly, he died of a heart attack before that. Now with this air conditioning issue, I have to believe that they indeed need to be investigated, and perhaps shut down. It's too bad for the elderly who are stuck there. If I were their families, I'd have them moved to another spot.
