SAN ANTONIO- A group of nearly 20 men and women who help save lives are not getting paid to do their job. Bernie Garza, who is an emergency responder, is one of them.

Garza recently quit working for Specialty Care EMS because he said the company owes him three weeks of back pay.

“For whatever reason the company started going through some financial situations where our pay checks were being held back,” explained Garza.

It’s been about a month now, and Garza has yet to get the money owed to him, even though he has made several attempts to reach out to the owners. Now another company, called Lone Star Ambulance is operating where Specialty Care EMS once did, but the interim director said they are not responsible for the previous owners’ debts.

For now, Garza will start looking at legal options to get paid for the hours he worked.
