SAN ANTONIO -- It's a busy street with cars whizzing by much like they do on any other busy street. But parents are complaining drivers don't stop for school buses picking up students headed to a nearby elementary school.

The bus stop is located near the corner of Padre and Roosevelt. The students who catch the bus there live in apartments on the same side of the street where the bus stops. But parents, wait, watch, and worry speeding drivers might hurt someone because many refuse to wait for the school bus.

Harlandale Independent School District spokesperson, Leslie Garza says the drivers are supposed to stop, even though the bus pulls off the road to a parking lot. According to Garza, drivers who refuse to stop could be charged more than $600.

When did we get so selfish and self-centered that we can't take a moment to stop for a school bus loading or unloading children in order to allow them safe passage to and from the bus? Is you time really that much more important that a child's life? Shame on you if you answer yes, even if only to yourself. On the flip side, you'd probably be the first one in line to call for the death of a driver that injures or kills a child in a reckless or drunken driver accident. What's the difference in the end, because the end result is the same and the disregard for the law is the same in any three of the suppositions.

I think people get tired of school buses impeding traffic flow by not turning right on red, stopping forever at RR crossings, stopping to pick up ONE kid, etc.

Bus drivers jot down their license plates numbers and send them to SAPD.

Again time for the judiciary to act. Officers: do your job and arrest these malfactors. Judges: if there is evidence that a person broke the law then sentence them to 150 hours of community service -- as human speed humps at the bus stop. The malfactor will certainly hope that the other drivers respect the flashing lights.
