SAN ANTONIO -- A local deputy has been charged with driving while intoxicated after the truck he was driving collided with an 18-wheeler Thursday morning.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday on the access road of Interstate 35 near Rittiman Road. A police report states the 18-wheeler was traveling north on the Interstate 35 access road when it was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck coming out of the turnaround lane. The collision punctured the big rig's fuel tank, causing diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway.
Investigators say the driver of the pickup truck, 32-year-old Ruan Matelski, left the scene. Officers caught up with him a short time later near Ray Bon and Eisenhauer Road. He was then arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Evading Arrest - Vehicle, and Failure to Stop and Give Information.
Matelski, who is a deputy with the Bexar County Sheriff's Department, has been placed on administrative leave.
