SAN ANTONIO -- Deputies captured a suspected copper thief after he crashed his car in a Far West Side neighborhood.
Deputies said a contractor spotted a man stealing copper from two homes under construction on Stillwater Parkway, near Culebra and FM 1560, around 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The contractor followed the man, who was driving a maroon-colored Hyundai Accent, to try to get a license plate number for the car. The suspect then apparently realized he was being followed and tried to flee. He ended up crashing his car into a utility pole at Loop 1604 and Emory Peak and then jumped out of the car and started running.
Officers spotted the man darting across Loop 1604 near Scobee Middle School and Big Country Elementary School. Both schools were then placed on "shelter in place" status while deputies continued their search for the suspect.
The man was caught a short time later.
