I was riding on Basse Road today at that location. Since reading about the accident I've reconsidered riding close to the curb at that section of Basse Road . . . the road appears to be a bit narrower at that site such that the cars do not leave enough space for a bike. The "3-foot rule" that Governor Perry vetoed should be reconsidered in the new session, and I believe City Council passed that rule as a City Ordinance so I urge SAPD to more scrupulously enforce that ordinance. If the driver at the scene would have left that three-foot space between him and the bicyclist the tragedy might have been averted. As for me, I'll take a whole lane when I'm on Basse, just to guarantee that the 3-foot rule is observed.

Not just when riding a bike. Don't forget to wear a helmet when skateboarding as ell. A coworker of mine lost her nephew from an accident that didn't need to result in death. The teen fell from his skateboard and hit his head. He went straight home and went to bed without telling his family about the accident. He never woke up again. Wearing a helmet may not look "cool", but it could save your life. Whether you are on a motorcycle, bicycle or skateboard, you should always wear one and make sure your child wears one. My condolences to this family. I can't imagine the loss you feel. Thank you for sharing your story with the public so it can possibly save a life in the future.

Always wear your helmet!! Always~ all it takes is one good hit on the head. weather it be by just falling down or by someone behind the wheel. people drive crazy on the road.. you read and hear about it all the time.. this makes me sad because I am an avid bicyclist and I myself have even had acouple of those Ohshit moments while riding.. luckily i was wearing my helmet on all occasions..
