DISCUSS: Breast cancer awareness decorations not allowed at airport

October is breast cancer awareness month, so expect to see pink all around the city. Even the Tower of the Americas was lit up in pink to show support. But not everyone is on board.

Sadly, breast and other cancer foundations are strangely quiet about the airport scanners as about 1/2 use the same x-rays common to dental and mammography imaging. It is well known x-rays are a greater threat to populations such as children, elderly, fair skinned, young women and people with DNA repair issues (BRCA gene). The next-generation scanners being deployed are even more powerful. With cancers of all types on the increase the perhaps the cure is not in colored ribbons? It is a public facility and should be open to not for profit education providers of all stripes. http://www.rockyflatsgear.com/Soft-X-rays-Might-Increase-Breast-Cancer-Risk-for-BRCA-1-and-2-Carriers.html http://www.cancernetwork.com/breast-cancer/content/article/10165/1848062

I think it's acceptable by an employer. What is not is a lawsuit by employees leading to a loss of jobs because of support for Ta tas.

There are many worthwhile causes. Is the airport supposed to provide all an equal opportunity to display their promotions at the airport? While theirs is a worthy cause, The Susan G. Komen Foundation, sponsors of Breast Awareness, seems to forget that there are many other cancers that affect women. The Komen Foundation discriminates against men by focusing totally on breast cancer. We love our Moms AND our Dads. We love our sisters AND our brothers. The Komen Foundation directors are big fat cats just interested in raking more money for their outrages salaries. Isn't Casey Anthony supposed to be in jail? Bob

I agree completely with R. Johnson's comment. I think he is correct in allowing employees to wear any support they want to show, but as a frequent traveler I really don't want to see the airport decorated for this cause or any other cause. Keep it clutter free and neutral of causes showing their support. Where would it end. While the cause of finding a cure for breast cancer is important, I have never really understood the "pink" thing everywhere. I see it everywhere these days and does not need to be added in our airports. I am more concerned about keeping our airports and those who fly safe. If I were to get breast cancer, I do not see where having "pink" at the airport will help me.

I think its perfectly acceptable. If they allow decorations for BCAM then they'd have to allow it for any holiday or awareness. In the same way that a school could allow the public to use it's street for a Christian parade, it would then have to allow the Arayan Brotherhood to use the same street for their event or something.

I think Rick Johnson is too concerned that the airport not look tacky than support breast awareness. He has no heart, and should not be in his position. If it was his wife or mother who had the disease maybe he'd think a little differently....... or maybe not. Cassandra M.

I agree with the airport decision not to show favoritism to any particular cause. It is a public facility through which many visitors pass with their own preference for charitable, political, or religious cause. It's best for this type of facility to remain neutral in such matters, just as courts and other government facilites do. When you can't please everyone, don't show preference to any one cause.

If you allow one you must allow all. Some we don't think highly of. Some are even dispicable. We all have causes we are passionate about, but I object to anyone shoving them in my face.
