SAN ANTONIO -- Stepping outside a University Hospital room, briefly, Veronica Kinney said she couldn’t shake the sounds or images of her friend being hit by a pick up truck Wednesday afternoon along the access road of I-10 West near Fair Oaks.

"As I was trying to process what happened, what the noise was, I saw Monica flew off her bike," she said.

Now friends and other cyclists are trying to raise awareness about safety and raise money to help the single mother of two.

"There has got to be a way to make it better for everybody so that this doesn't happen routinely," said Jimmy Britton.

The owner of Britton’s Bicycle Shop said he received many messages from cyclists who were upset after hearing about the accident that left the 39 year old victim with a severe spinal cord injury.

One cyclist told Britton is is done with cycling and planned sell his bike.
"I was brain-numb when I heard about the accident, " said Britton.

He trained with Caban who was preparing for her second Ironman Competition.
"She asked my why this happened. I said I don't know why. But I know God is with you and I know he has a plan,” said Kinney.

Kinney said Caban is a single mother who was laid off from work.
Just before the accident, Kinney told us her friend was very excited about a job interview that same day.

Cyclists, friends and strangers have raised money to help Caban through ActiveGiving.

On October 24th, Bike Texas is working with others to host an event about bicycle safety.

The special guest, Tracy Hadden Loh, will speak about Federal Bicycle Transportation Funding: What it Means for Texas.

The event is at 6:30 in the VIA community room at 1021 San Pedro.

Many Christian Pastors have been calling for an outright ban on bicycling on city streets. It is hard to even leave the parking lots of the Christian Churches along Loop 1604 after worship, due to the large numbers of the unsaved on bicycles that clog the road. The resulting damage to automobiles as the congregation is forced to drive through all that metal is becoming a problem. Judging from the fingers and leg parts that are found by the custodians after everyone leaves, some of the bicycle riders are being injured as well. I join others in demanding that these scofflaws be arrested and taken to West Texas or some similar place where they cannot disrupt traffic. I believe that would be a sensible policy to follow and would avoid all the damage to cars that we are suffering through now.

although i am a careful driver, i am never comfortable driving on roads with cyclists. even if cyclists and drivers are alert and aware, even if everyone is following the rules, and even if biking on roads is legal - vehicles and bicycles just do not mix! recently, while driving on a busy street, i almost did not see two seasoned cyclists who were waiting side by side first in line for the light to change. they were almost invisible in the angle of the late afternoon sun. i rolled down my window and told them, and they thanked me and said they hadn't known. i regret to hear of this unfortunate accident and send strength to all parties involved and hope for a complete recovery for the woman who was injured.

Bike riders have every right to be on the streets just like cars and trucks do, the problem is that a lot of bike riders don't believe that they need to obey traffic rules as do cars and trucks. We have all come to stop signs when bikes just keep on going, and bikes driving down the middle of the street. They need to show the same respect to others as much as the respect they expect from others on the road. My sympathy goes out to that rider, and hopes for quick recovery.

What is wrong with Texas, and especially this area? Texas trafic code for bicyclist states that bicyclist mat use any road in Texas. Granted some bicyclist ride wring, but that does not mean they should be run over. I have not heard of any one being prosecuted for wreckless driving or not being observant when it comes to bicyclist. It is a shame that a state that is so big and beautiful can not assure bicyclist that they can enjoy the state. By the way pedestrians and wheel chairs are treated the same. It seems people also do not observe walk signs for pedestrians, and law enforcment does nothing about it. I have been walking with the sign and a police officer there at the intersection and almost hit right in front of them. They do nothing. Bicyclist have the right to use of the road. BICYCLES ARE VEHICLES! SHARE THE ROAD!
