SAN ANTONIO -- A natural gas leak that prompted evacuations on the city's west side during Tuesday evening rush hour is now under control.

San Antonio Police officers say a construction worker hit a 20-inch gas main in the 8000 block of Marbach, just inside Loop 410.

Officers immediately evacuated businesses along that major corridor, including the Marbach Christian Church daycare and John Jay High School.

CPS sent crews to contain the leak. A SAPD officer told News 4 a rig was placed on top of the leak and was holding back the flow of natural gas.

Natural gas causes dizziness and some officers were already experiencing that sensation.

Officers say their biggest concern was keeping people out of the area because natural gas can ignite very quickly and cause massive damage.

All of the side streets surrounding that area of Marbach were shut down as police directed traffic away from the area.

Traffic along Loop 410, Highway 90 and Highway 151 continued as normal.
