SAN ANTONIO - Get out and do it by September 1, 2010 -- that's the message county leaders sent to business owners in a strip mall on the Northwest Side. The county plans to tear down the Northwest Plaza Shopping Center off Fredericksburg near Vance Jackson to prevent flooding problems.

The strip mall holds more than 30 businesses and employs hundreds of people. Thursday night some of those people showed up to a meeting at Jefferson High School looking for answers. But instead, the county dropped a bombshell on them.

The meeting took less than 30 minutes. Many people showed to voice their concerns about how they'd provide for their families if they were out work.

County leaders explained they'd be evicting more than 30 Northwest Plaza businesses. Their plan is to turn the area into a retention pond.

"It's an area that would retain or hold back water for a period of 24-48 hours, and then release it in a controlled fashion,” Bexar County Flood Control Manager Art Villarreal told the crowd.

Back in 2002 the Woodlawn Lake community saw some major flooding. The county wants to make sure that doesn't ever happen again.

“It is goodbye,” said James Markwell, owner of the Northwest Flea Market. “The time, the area, the footage is not available to build another market like this one."

Markwell opened the Northwest Flea Market in 1973. In less than 30 minutes he saw his life's work come to an end.

"It's been a very good business; an interesting business. I've enjoyed it," Markwell commented.

James told us he doesn't have the strength to open up another business. He said the hardest part is having to break the news to the dozens of tenants who have booths in his flea market. Still. as he says goodbye, he tries to stay positive.

"I will look for the sunrise and not the sunset," he added.

News 4 WOAI also confirmed the county is willing to help these businesses with moving expenses. But that's it. They’ll be filing a Petition for Condemnation at the courthouse Friday. That will allow them to take over the 26-acre piece of land legally.

How about moving Twin Theatre Adult Video out of the county? The business serves no purpose to the community. All they're good for is having their customers arrested for lewd behavior. Actually, a total of 9 men arrested in a 5 month period. Get ride of them!

We are the Government. Everything you own belongs to us. By the way, isn't the County predominantly Republican controlled?

This whole deal sounds real fishy. I smell one helluva backdoor deal going on. I sure hope that these business owners can afford a good lawyer. The city is apparently using the "eminent domain" excuse, but it sounds like they've done so with very little research. If any of the business owners have any money, I'd hire an engineer to evaluate the plan and search for alternatives; I'd sue the city for a temporary injunction to stop the eviction; and I'd city the city council members because I'm sure at least one of them is getting a kickback from somewhere. Start digging through ALL of their assets and financial information looking for connections NOW before they have a chance to hide it.

lenny. Yes, Old Hickory had the best onion rings and George's Black Cow was great too. What was the name of that Ice House on West Ave by Clower that people hung out at after school? was it Victor's? And where the Good-Will store is, it was a place called Rubin's? where you had to dig through stuff.

I also worked, IH10 & Fredericksburg Rd., now that's where the flooding would happen, but not where they're talking about now.

I still say they should buy out the homes around Woodlawn Lake and make the retention pond there.

I actually remember that year 2002.I was going to N.I.T. (now Everest) and we were laughing cuz we saw a dumpster and a small car drift away from the water rushing down the parking lot.

I have a great idea. Instead of closing down Northwest Center for a flood water retention pond, why not use the property that WalMart and all the stores in that strip mall that are on Vance Jackson. That's alot more than a measley 26 acres. Think of the size of pond you could have then and the other positive would be that a once quiet neighborhood could start getting back to normal without all the scumbags, trash and freaks, hood rats and the likes.
