SAN ANTONIO -- One person was seriously injured after a construction crew hit a major gas line Monday afternoon.

The accident happened shortly after 1:00 p.m. in the 14,600 block of Huebner Road near N.W. Military Highway on the Northwest Side.

A crew working for a TxDOT contractor hit a 8-inch line that supplies natural gas to the neighborhood, which sparked an explosion and fire. One of the crew workers was seriously injured. The 49-year-old man was pulled from a burning truck by a co-worker. He suffered 3rd degree burns and was taken by AirLIFE to Brooke Army Medical Center in critical condition.

Some people in the area were evacuated for a short time while the fire burned.  They were allowed to return around 5:30 p.m.  Power was also knocked out in the area. By about 8:30 p.m. all power had been restored.  CPS Energy is now working on restoring gas lines to 45 customers.

CPS Energy crews cut the gas line and plugged it to stop gas from feeding the fire which put it out.

Just before 10:00 p.m. TxDOT had traffic moving in all direction near where the accident happened.
