SAN ANTONIO -- The city is marking several trees this year in several parks with pink paint.  The paint identifies that tree to crews who are cutting them down.

The city says this is part of maintaining parks, however, it says this year it is cutting down more trees because of the drought.

The trees that are coming down are dead and pose a risk to people driving or walking under them.

The city’s forester, Michael Nentwich, says it’s a good idea to check the trees around your home as well.  He says you should look for stress signs -- like leaves falling off before fall sets in, bark changing colors or breaking off easily.

He also says don’t go cutting down trees because they might just need some help and aren’t actually dead.

“Call a licensed and insured arborist to come out and be your tree doctor,”  Nentwich told News 4 WOAI.

You can find an arborist online or in the yellow pages.  Just be sure they are licensed by the city.
