SAN ANTONIO - VIA Metropolitan Transit now has the green light to go full speed ahead with the Downtown streetcar project.

The city council voted 8-3 to eliminate the $15 Million in private funding that was slowing the project down. Businesses will not have to contribute any money.

Three council members, including Carlton Soules, wanted private investment.

"If they want to invest, lets formalize the way they can invest before we move forward on this vote. Obviously that didn't pass," Councilman Soules told News 4 WOAI.

Councilman Diego Bernal wanted to eliminate private funding since the streetcar route was expanded near homes and small businesses.

“Those property owners include small businesses and residents and people who live in homes. I'm not prepared to tax them,” Bernal said.

VIA can now start the design phase of the project.

The city's $40 Million contribution to the project will stay the same. Bexar County put up $92 Million and VIA says it has come up with the rest of the funding which includes state and federal funding. The entire project is estimated to cost at least $190 Million.

A handful of people spoke out before the council Wednesday night. Opponents blasted VIA, saying the transit agency's vision of a streetcar system isn't realistic. But VIA officials say that's just not true.

The streetcar is expected to launch in 2017.

What a waste of money. Suckers ! ! Castro & his clan of habitual 'spenders' mirrors that of the Obama administration. Taxpayers will do as 'I' say, not as they vote. Mexico City, aka San Antonio is a bit too alien for me.

Instead of more background checks for legally purchase of guns, why not have intelligence test for voters?

I notice they didn't put it up for a vote by their constituents. They're probably afraid we might nix the idea. Sometimes even idiots can be smart.

I thought the public said NO on this. Is the mayor and city council doing their dead level best to put us over budget?? Oh wait we would already be over budget if they hadn't increased the sales tax. Yes folks that means everyone rich and poor pays more. Keep track of how they vote and vote these clowns out of office. They think they're untouchable.. Prove them wrong.

The only thing left for the public to do is to take names and vote these people out! They do not have your best interest at heart and do not represent the people who put them where they are. Enough is enough, time to vote them OUT! Unfortunately a lot of you were dumb enough to fall for their lies once and now it's too late to undo your damage. Wise up next time elections roll around.

Don't they get the message that we don't want this!! The people who talk about it will help traffic, etc - it just runs straight across down town. It is not like you can take it from North to South. Waste of money!!!
