SAN ANTONIO -- Christus Santa Rosa Health Care System plans to lay off approximately 400 workers this summer.

Christus Santa Rosa informed the Texas Workforce Commission it will be permanently closing its 'City Centre' location on North Santa Rosa Street and consolidating the facility with its existing Children's Hospital.

The layoffs will take place between July 31st and August 13th. Some of the affected employees will be able to transfer to other Christus Santa Rosa locations.

Currently, the City Centre facility is set up for half adult care, half children care. The building will receive a $135 million upgrade to make it a children's hospital entirely.

The 400 workers getting pink slips work on the adult side.

"We have to right-size our organization," Vice President of Administration Jerry Rodriguez says. "Our primary goal is to find employment for those associates within the Christus Santa Rosa Health System. Currently we have 90 associates that have accepted positions within Santa Rosa."

That leaves more than 300 people unemployed, possibly to be reassigned, and it's unclear how many of those jobs might vanish through attrition.

Employees News 4 spoke with off camera say they just got official word and are not sure how the layoffs affect them.

This is only the beginning of what is yet to come. As an employee of this charitable Health care system, the debt for providing free care to a large uninsured indigent population is being paid for by the very associates that have lost their jobs. The Workforce Commission will now be saturated with the employees affected by this massive lay off. In turn this debt will fall upon working individuals. The young and able to work won't as long as the cushy pyramid this group reLIES upon and expects to continue to support the cycle of their choices, sadly they don't realize the direct effect as in this case, 400 working tax paying individuals picking up the tab.The children need medical attention so this service needs to be provided despite the parent's inability to pay. This is a major wake up call San Antonio!!!

I always worry when one hospital system lays off employees. It seems the other systems in town (I work at one of them) thinks this means they can lay off people also. We have already lost our all 401 matching - they said it was temporary but it is not mentioned in benefits period starting 7/1; lost our up to $300 bonus in Sept; lost our $20 HEB gift card at Christmas, changes so that cost of medical ins stayed the same but benefits went down BUT still see lots of travel, expensive meals, expensive alcohol by the executives.
