ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas -  A 15-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his 6-year-old cousin Sunday afternoon while the two were inside an Atascosa County home. Earlier information supplied to the media had said the older boy was 12 years old; it was later corrected by authorities.

Initially, reports stated the victim was a girl, but late Sunday evening the Bexar County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the victim is a 6-year-old boy.

Investigators say the 15-year-old boy may have been showing a shotgun to his 6-year-old cousin when he shot him at about 3:40pm.

The two children were inside a mobile home near Post Oak and Stacy roads.  Soward says a family member was there at the time of the shooting, but had stepped outside.

Chief Deputy David Soward says there were several guns in the home, and at least one of those was loaded in addition to the shotgun.

The Atascosa County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers are now investigating the accident. There's still no word if charges could be filed in the case.

My heart goes out to this family. I can't imagine the hell they are going through. I hope the facts of the story speak to families who are passionate about guns. Don't fool yourself...if adults who are old enough to know better, get into trouble with guns, why would you expect more maturity from kids? For crying out loud, they are featured as toys, used in video games, and glamorized in every kind of media. If you keep "a bunch of guns" in your house, you the ultimate role model, are just re-inforing the infactuation. I have a short fuse, and bad eye-sight, so I exercise my judgement by not having guns. Most of the guns that get discharged in the home are at family members or friends...rarely the theoretical stranger. If I were a passionate about guns, I would first ask myself, why?
