SAN ANTONIO -- What do your children like to eat for breakfast and is it healthy for them?
There is a cereal on the market that claims it can support a child's immune system. And with the flu going around, a lot of people are wondering if that brand really can help their kids stay healthy.
Cocoa Krispies has a bright yellow banner on the front of the box that says the cereal now helps support your child's immunity with 25% of the daily value of antioxidants and nutrients.
Esther Torres told News 4 WOAI, "I would buy it. I would say this would help me. That will show me that my child is going to be healthier (by eating) Cocoa Krispies."
We showed the box to Heather King. She is a Registered Dietician and the Nutrition Programs Manager for Spectrum Athletic Clubs. We wanted to know if the cereal really can help boost a child's immune system.
King said, "I would have to say that it is certainly a stretch of the imagination. They have added some simple nutrients like Vitamin C... to the product and that is a help but what you've got to realize is this is still a sweetened cereal."
News 4 WOAI is still waiting to hear back from cereal maker Kellogg's about its claim that the cereal help supports immunity. A company spokeswoman has been quoted in published reports as saying the development of the product had nothing to do with concern about the Swine Flu.
