SAN ANTONIO -- A center on the South Side that gives hope for disabled children and adults has been transformed.
The Mission Road campus has been open for years. A celebration was held Sunday at the new and improved campus, which includes a new multi-purpose building, a chapel, and a grand pavilion.
The campus is for children with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and mental retardation.
Tabaitha Weaver's adopted son has brain damage.
"It's been an awesome charge for him," Weaver told News 4 WOAI. "He has just grown so much into a young man."
More than 100 disabled children and adults work at reaching their potential at the center every day.
Sunday's ceremony celebrated the new Oppenheimer Center. Marmon Mok Architecture designed the building, which will be used for students on campus and an outreach community program.
"Half of it is for adults, a day program three or four classrooms for adults with developmental disabilities," explained Lora Butler. "The other half is used for our children for a summer and after school program."
The event not only introduced parents to what's new at the center but also shared a new hope for San Antonio special needs children on the South Side.
"It has been an awesome experience for us," added Weaver. "They have so much to offer the kids that parents can't offer at home."
All of the improvements will allow for the launch of a day camp this summer.
