SAN ANTONIO - West Side neighbors will target Hamilton Street between Poplar and Culebra as advocates try to make the area safer.
The West End Hope Action Organization members say residents complained about drug crime and prostitution at Poplar and Hamilton most in a survey taken Monday evening. They're compiling all the information from the surveys in preparation for their next meeting Monday. They believe by attacking the problems one by one, the area will become safer, step by step.
Improving the area is a personal mission for Carolina Reyes. She's an admitted former drug dealer and prostitute, who is now trying to help others get off the streets.
"We didn't grow up saying, 'I want to be a drug dealer. I want to be a prostitute.' Something happened where we went that way. Everyone deals with life different. I believe the way my life has been restored by God, their life can be restored also," she said.
The group is raising money to buy flashlights and hard hats for National Night Out, to show that the area is "under construction."
