SAN ANTONIO -- Bexar County Sheriff Office detectives have a strong warning for you: be very careful about the kinds of stickers you put on your car. They tell News 4 San Antonio exclusively that burglars are targeting vehicles with very specific stickers, anything that indicates there may be weapons inside your car or truck.

You see National Rifle Association stickers and hunting stickers everywhere, but when it comes to criminals, law enforcement officials see them as red flags.

"They're looking for any indicator of what type of property might be in the car," says a BCSO detective who works undercover. He adds his team is seeing a huge jump in the number of vehicle burglaries in and around the county where thieves are looking for one thing: weapons.

"They would smash the window, search the vehicle. They would take the fire arm out, steal the firearm and leave behind other expensive items such as phones and computers and things like that." He's seen dozens of incidents in the past month.

So why now? In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre this past December -- looming gun control legislation on capitol hill has criminals looking ahead. They see the demand for firearms on the black market, and right now, business is booming.

"The street price for firearms is rising pretty quickly," our source says.

This detective says they're not just looking for guns in your car, they're also breaking into your home to hunt for guns.

"I think that if you have a firearm-related sticker, it is reasonable for a burglar to assume that you have a firearm either in your vehicle or in your home."

The detective recommends taking those stickers down.

Fact @GSDlady: If the “victims” in the shootings you quote (all of which were committed, by the way, by people who were, or whose parents were, registered democrats…that’s a verifiable fact) had been armed, it’s a FACT that there would have been less deaths. There’s a difference, @twister, between being a law-abiding, registered carrier of a fire arm, and a “gun-toting fool” which is what you would be if you could qualify for a CHL. So which is it…criminal past, or mental illness that keeps you from packing? Oh, and @210bro…find me a statistic, don’t just spew BS. And you can call anyone you want to when I draw my .45, because I’ll have drawn it in just cause. If you’re the target, however, I suggest you have the morgue on speed-dial because it’s probably the only call you’ll have time to make. Don’t threaten my home, property, or family or that of my neighbors. I don’t need “the element of surprise” because I can hit what I am at the first time. Oh, and @LindaB, you are 100% correct. NRA people carry their guns, instead of leaving them in their cars.

That's funny. When I read the headline here, my first thought was we already knew big government was looking to steal from law abiding gun owning Americans.

your .45 won't do anything. why, because unless you have it drawn ready to fire it's pretty much useless against the element of suprise. if you do have it drawn and ready, i'm calling the ATF, FBI, SAPD, County, CIA, Nat'l Guard, DPS, Homeland Security... They'll fix you right up.

Fact: Shooters in all these events did have guns. GSDlady...just so we are clear, "Shooters"(people), had the guns. The guns themselves didn't do the shooting.

The only sticker on my car is the one with the license plate info where I paid too much.

Don't underestimate that teens and young people also commit these kinds of crimes. A lot of them know their dads or grandparents leave guns in vehicles or around the house and it's easy pickings. I've seen that play out in real life.

well Talula, maybe the liberals should start putting signs in their yards that say "neighbor has heart condition, bad vision and a gun collection". Or "neighbor is at work and neglects his wife to watch Hannity". anyone can play the label game! but at least you're doing what your told by drive by NRA propaganda.
