SAN ANTONIO - A Bexar County Deputy was shot and killed Saturday morning while responding to an accidental shooting call on the city's East Side. The shooting happened at 2 am on Rigsby Ave and SE Loop 410.

Sgt. Kenneth Vann, 45, was in his patrol car at a traffic light on Rigsby when a white car with several people in it pulled up next to him and opened fire, striking the deputy several times. The suspected vehicle pulled up on the right side of Sgt. Vann's patrol car and started shooting through the front passenger window, killing Sergeant Vann. The patrol car then rolled forward, hitting safety barrels under Loop 410.

Sgt. Vann was responding to a call on Old Corpus Christi Road at the time of the shooting.

Since the murder, the Bexar County Sheriff's Department Mobile Command center has been up and running.

"Having this coordinated effort is key to success, especially in this kind of a crime," said Deputy Chief Dale Bennett of the Bexar County Sheriff's Department.

A sea of law enforcement agencies have been investigating this murder case.

"From San Antonio Police to the Marshall's office, DPS -- we have ICE agents out here," said Deputy Chief Bennett.

At this time investigators are still trying to find a motive.

"If it was random, if it was some kind of gang thing, or if he was targeted," said Bennett. "Maybe it was a wrong identification, maybe they were looking for somebody else."

Detectives in the case have impounded a white car, but officers don't know if the vehicle is connected to the case.

"So we're still researching and gathering intelligence," said Bennett.

Sgt. Vann leaves behind a wife who is also a Sargeant with the Sheriff's office, 2 sons and a daughter.  The Sheriff's office is asking that anyone who may have any information about the murder of Sgt. Vann please call the Sheriff's Office at 210-335-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP.

It is amazing that any of you are even thinking that it is OK to shoot a law enforcement officer. There is no aurgument that will justify this. This was an assult on all of us. These pwople think it is OK to take/do whatever they want. Next it could be one of your family, your kid at the pizza shop cause he didn't get the olives on the pizza, your mom fixing someones hair and didn't get it quite right your brother cable installer cause he didn't hook a dude up with free stuff. These guys shot an officer in clearly marked car, think you matter to them? I wish we could at least double law enforcemnet.

@srercrcr - The call he was responding to was not a coded call as there were no injuries and it was an accidental discharge of a weapon. No code, no running lights. So he was obeying the traffic laws as he should, even at 2 in the morning.

Could this have been retribution for Police abuse elsewhere? How about the family of the murdered 14yo killed by the SAPD? Maybe one of them? Or the family of the accident victim killed by the drunk cop? Maybe one of them? Are people getting fed up with a justice system that shows leniency to some criminals (those with badges) and hammers others? Either way these guys are screwed! They left shell casings (most likely with fingerprints)so it'll be just a matter of time b4 they're caught

It's way too early to call this cowardly murder an ambush. This poor guy was gunned downed, shot, murdered, but ambushed? I think this writer came to her/his own conclusion before the investigation even started.

There are low-life punks out there not worthy to share the same air we breathe. Whether it's in this life or the next, justice will be served. They better start fearing the next one though because they are already condemned. I hope the media will help to get some information out to the public in order to help increase the reward. I will not hesitate for one second to donate toward that fund.

one thing i know and two things for sure and thats this is san antonio and we dont have crimes like that and two the law enforcement in this town will go to the ends of the earth to solve this.so everyone should know this kind of action cause for a punishing reaction on all the innocent citizens of this town on the route on finding the guilty,so its praying time for everyone.i send my prayers out for everybody thats going to be affected or thats been affected already.alot of people have book sense and alot of people have street sense, but alot of people dont have common sense, because to unleash the boys in blue is just crazy, now the whole town is on curfew.

@ SATXlady, no offense, but that is exactly what they want. We won't be cowards or intimadated by their actions. They bring a knife, we'll bring a gun. They bring a gun, we'll bring a tank. They start the fire, we'll bring the gasoline. The good people in this Country far outnumber the Scum. If they want to play, it's gonna be Open Season. Every wanna be punk is hiding in his mama's closet right now. They crossed the line.
