SAN ANTONIO - Educators are spreading the word that bats aren't scary, they are productive members of the animal kingdom.
Hundreds of people flocked to the San Antonio Bat Fest Symposium at Trinity University's Laurie Auditorium this week. A 22-year-old bat named Zoe was the focus of the event. She is an African straw colored flying fox bat and she eats fruit.
Bat experts say they enjoy educating everyone about what bats are really like. They say there are many myths surrounding the mammals including the one that they're blind. Experts say bats are not blind, and see well with their ears using echo location.
Educators at they symposium told News 4 WOAI bats have an important purpose because they help farmers by eating crop insects.
